iPhone 3G pros and cons

June 24, 2008

The only thing I change more than email addresses is cell phones.

This post is going to rationalize whether or not I get an iPhone (and then you’re going to comment and tell me why you think I should or shouldn’t).

Reasons to get an iPhone

  1. I’m a mac user. The phone would sync everything for me.
  2. One device. One thing to carry.
  3. Boredom solver.
  4. Awesome web browser.
  5. I’m out of contract and other phones are not as appealing.
  6. The Apps Store promises some free downloads. Pay once for some cool extra.
  7. Roll over minutes on AT&T network.
  8. More stuff is being developed for it.

Reasons against getting an iPhone:

  1. AT&T network (90% of friends and my entire family is on Verizon)
  2. Contract price (~$82/month).
  3. Expensive to replace if broken.

Verizon is releasing the LG Dare, which will use VCAST instead of a separate data plan. Link to Dare on PhoneArena.

Reasons to get the Dare:

  1. Verizon Network (in Calling to most of my friends and all my family)
  2. Price for data ($15 more than current a month, unlimited data and texting; total cost ~$60)

Reasons against getting the Dare:

  1. Web Browser isn’t the best, I probably wouldn’t use it.
  2. Doesn’t sync calendar & contacts.

Ultimately it comes down to: Is the iPhone worth $40 [error: I can't do math. 60 from 82 is 22 not 40] $22 a month? (at currently projected plans).  I think the answer is yes, especially since I’m getting a raise at work next week.

Help me decide.  Is it worth it?  Are you getting one? Do you have one and love it? Why?

I haven’t found anything except my own desire to change my mind. The phone is being released on a day I have to work, so that’s probably a good thing. I’ll most likely succumb as there are no good new phones for Verizon.

I’m also in the same boat. Have Verizon and their network is excellent in this area (so a lot of my friends and family use it). I have an LG ENV that I like as well. That said, the iPhone features are simply so good that it’s worth the extra money to me.

I was on the fence until last night when I took the 40 minutes to watch Apple’s feature instructions. That video showed me features I wasn’t aware of, and pushed me over the iFence.

My biggest two iPhone cons are:
    - Camera is a downgrade from my LG (same MP, but I lose auto-focus, flash, and video…none of which I use often enough to keep me).
    - Picture messaging may as well be non-existent. I do often use picture messaging to send funny things to friends. I’m really hoping that someone writes an App to fix this. If not, maybe I’ll just have to learn to code iPhone.

i have one, love it, just when that bill comes around, it makes me think twice if its really worth it. very handy, get lost a lot and the gps is amazing. i say you get it. i used to not even want a phone unless it was an iPhone. now i can’t live without it. and as for the picture mail, you can just use the iPhone’s built in mail to send and receive photos. its basically the same thing. i am a mac user as well, and, things just kind of… sync perfectly :D

Make sure and check if your employer qualifies for the 15% off per month on your bill. Or if you have an old school email address, that may qualify as well. It makes the price more reasonable.
